Sony PRS 500 under Ubuntu 9.04

I recently installed Ubuntu 9.04 and find that it has trouble mounting my Sony PRS 500 ereader. Device Manager reports:
'Insufficient power to operate USB device' (which seems curious as it is connected to the mains power.)

It also reports:

USB Version: ??????.??
Connected at: ??????.??

Has anyone any suggestions?

Drives downloaded and installed? What is does the kernel buffer say when you plug it in, what about other output? Can you give us the output of
Code:
$ lsusb -v
$ dmesg | tail
$ cat /etc/mtab

Many thanks for these suggestions.

> Drives downloaded and installed?

None seem to be needed -- under Ubuntu 7.10, the device worked the first time I connected it.

> What is does the kernel buffer say when you plug it in, what about other output?

I'm afraid I don't know how to answer that question.
