Something simple? "Link To" name/heading on desktop shortcuts.
 

Question would be, is there a way to remove this? Similar to a checkbox in Windoze, or something to run to stop this from appearing when I save some site to the desktop.

Seems simple but my googlefoo escapes me atm. Something not uber important but it just really bugs me. I realize I can just rename everything but would be nice to just be able to disable that.

Which distro are you using, and which windows manager/desktop environment (Cinnamon, KDE, Xfce etc.)?

The latter info in particular is very important when dealing with problems associated with the desktop and file/folder management.

By the way, what do atm and tia mean? Remember that there are not only native English speakers reading this forum and others may get confused with acronyms.

Thanks for the reply hydrurga, sorry if I wasn't specific enough. I realize this is such a minor thing but it bugs me and seems so simple. It's just for random web pages that I seem to save a lot of for one reason or another, not whole webpages I want to bookmark or anything like that.

I'm trying to replicate this, TempusT. Can you give me a step by step account of how you would generate the problem, including which browser you're using? Cheers.

Using Chrome, no real step by step to speak of. Just drag a web page link to the desktop from the browser to save something you want to read later (that's not something you need to bookmark necessarily).

When you asked I started thinking maybe it's a Chrome thing and not Linux but I still can't find much info out there. Hard to believe I'm the only one odd enough that this just bugs them but... Never mind, it does the same thing for a dragged shortcut from Firefox as well so I guess that points back to Linux code of some sort.

I did find this thread: http://askubuntu.com/questions/67501...e-display-name But Geez that seems like a long drawn out way to get around something that seems so simple. To be honest I'm not even sure I'm following everything presented there, fairly new to the Linux scene.

I thought I was just missing something along the lines of Windows "remove shortcut arrow" option but maybe not... Again I realize I can rename but that just seems line an unnecessary extra step, at least to me.

that looks like a bautiful solution to me.
granted, more like a workaround.
the energy you spent on starting a thread here and complaining that linux is not like windows, you could have spent on trying to implement the solution.
surely we would help you with that.

And it may be the only choice.

I checked Nemo's preferences - there appears to be no setting there to remove that text for new links (which I admit is a bit frustrating).

Then I had a look at dconf-editor, again nothing.

The thing about solutions like the one OP found is that they appear a wee bit esoteric at first, but once you get them working (which is educational in itself), they just do the job and become another part of your Linux armoury.

If you decide to implement the script, I would be interested to see how you get on with it, TempusT, and of course more than willing to help if you encounter any problems.

Edit: No, it seems Firefox saved the whole html page, it's not a shortcut.

Maybe this workaround works for you:

Right-click on desktop and select "create url-shortcut" (not sure if this correct translation, but should be something like this. I am using dutch language). The you can copy and paste the URL, and give a descriptive name. tested it on Debian 8, xfce desktop.

Not as easy as drag-and-drop, but still fairly easy.

Ondoho, it was not my intention to be "complaining that linux is not like windows", nor do I think I stated it that way. I was simply asking if I had missed something somewhere to turn this "feature" off.

Not being that well versed in Linux (obvious understatement) messing with scripts and such does seem a little daunting but I will see what I can do with what I found in that thread.
