Someone please tell me what is wrong with my computer?

Watch the video first

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7P...ew?usp=sharing

Notice how long it takes to shut down, also how it turns itself back on again?!! I believe this is a problem with the proprietary Nvidia drivers but I'm not sure.

Aside from that, I can't access the boot selection screen? You'll see in the video I press f12 multiple times and nothing happens. I think ubuntu causes it because I've never had that problem before. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

More information will help.

What make/model laptop, what distro/version, and what specs, especially the specs of the video card?

You might take a look in /var/log/messages and/or /var/log/system and see if you find anything useful there. (What exact log files exist on your machine will depend on the distro.)

It's a desktop not a laptop, watch the video on the link please. The specs are on the attached image. I'm not seeing a "messages" inside the log folder nor a "system" (using ubuntu by the way), and how would I know what to look for inside a file like that being a beginner user?

Hi...

Welcome to the forum

Thank you but we will need more information than what is shown on the boxes. Please open a terminal and post the results from the following command...

Code:
lspci -nnk
Simply copy and paste the command to the terminal and vice versa with the results. If you don't know where the terminal is located. see the information here.

Honestly, for us to be able to help you here, you will need to learn how to do these things. Learning how to use the CLI (or terminal or command line) will be critical if you want to keep using Linux.

Navigating to folders in Ubuntu is similar to how it works in Windows. Here is a short tutorial on a few to access the information frankbell requested.

Regards...

I think pressing and holding the shift key during boot will give you the boot selection screen.
What Ubuntu version?

This may be relevant: http://askubuntu.com/questions/18285...lection-screen

GeForce GTX 770
Use Restricted Drivers if you suspect the vidcard.

I slapped the f12* and del* buttons to attempt to get the bios screen up but neither worked. And the make/model is in the picture I attached earlier

Also, when I log out, my screen goes blank and I can't do anything, I need to restart the computer. Meaning e.g. if I wanted to log out and switch from unity to gnome shell I'd just get a black screen after logging out.

output you post says a gigabyte, it may boot so fast that you'll need to try a dead start, because it looked for a long time to do a reboot. turn off , turn on then immediately press and hold down the key that is needed to get into Bios...

Google says..

don't slap
press and hold immediately after you turn on your computer.

if you get in look around and see if you have option to change to BIO's boot, good to know~
