Some questions on mandrake 9.2

hello again. i have installed mandrake 9.2 today on my machine in an empty partition of my hd (i got w2k too) and i found some newbie problems:

1- cannot surf the net and get mail. I got a cable connection with a Motorola sb4200 cable modem USB. Maybe it goes if i install a network card?
My access provider tell me that the connection must be automatic without nothing to configure, but nothin goes...

2- cannot see the others partitions on my hd, in order to access the files that i got and work under windows. I'm just stupid or what?
Must i to have installed linux in the same partition than Windows OS or do i must to install anything more?

More questions soon... Thanks

Now in spanish:

Hola amigos.

Gracias... (más preguntas pronto)

i'm still on dial-up so i have no idea about the cable connection but i am dual-booting win200pro (happy to say it hasn't seen much action lately). it's been a couple of weeks since my install but i think mandrake detected and mounted my win partion automatically.

if you havn't already check the /mnt/ folder in konqueror (hit the up button till you can't any more...look for a mnt folder and then a windows folder) or try cd'ing to /mnt/windows/ in the konsole.
if you don't see any sign of windows by using those two methods it could be that the windows partition isn't mounted....in this case you can:
open up your start menu and select configuration, hardware, and then harddrake.
wait for the detection to finish and then select your hard drive underneath the "Disk" section (most likely it will be "hda")
click on the run config tool
click on your win partition (the blue bar)
you should then be able to select from a list of actions such as: mount, mount point, format, resize, and delete.
i probably don't have to warn you about being carefull but if your partition isn't mounted and accesible already these tools should be able to make it so it is.

to see your other partitions on your hard drive, you need to mount them. however, being windows 2000, if you are using NTFS you have to download the module appropriate to your kernel.

to find out your kernel, you can go to the command line and type:
"uname -r"

to get an NTFS module just go to linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net and click on the appropriate module.

once you get the module installed, you must mount the partition (my guess is it is probably hda1). to do so you have to first create a mount directory and change it's permissions. in the command line type:

"mkdir /mnt/windows"
"chmod a+rw /mnt/windows"

then you can mount the partition by typing:
"mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows"

once the drive is mounted, you should be able to cd to that directory and view your stuff.

as far as your network adapter, what kind of card are you using again?? i think i missed it.

hope that helps ya out,
