Some problems formatting storage drive

Hello everyone!

Hay, I just got another hard drive and wanted to use it as storage only, buy I cannot seem to format the thing correctly. I went to 'Harddrake" (mandrake 10.0), selected the hard drive and formatted it as Journalised FS: ext3 with the mount point as: file:/mnt/hdII. The problem is that all of my file:/ data is there.......? In addition, I am not able to put anything on the drive: I am told "access denied."

Any ideas on whether or not I formatted it correctly. Oh, yes, also.....any thoughts on the mount location? ( file:/mnt/hdII)

Thanks for the help,
EEK.

Can you post the output from:
fdisk -l

And:
mount

David_Ross,

Thanks for helping but.................

Humm....I am really sorry about this, but I am a bit lost.

You are asking about the output of the format disk, no? If this is the case, well, using Harddrake, it just said......something will be written to disk, and that was it.

With respect to the mount point, I just typed in: fiile:/mnt/hdII. I can see the Hard Disc icon on my desktop, if that will help.

Sorry about being such a newb'
EEK.

R80200; access denied is reference to ssur, ?did u attempt to format via
usr or superusr? if usr that will give access denied. try tryagain

Hello there,

Thanks for helping out....

Yup, in order to open harddrake I needed to enter the su password. I was thinking that this would be a matter of just formatting the drive and that was it....but I am stumped.

Any thoughts?
Eric.

Sure thing....this is what I get:

Disk /dev/hda: 41.1 GB, 41110142976 bytes

Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System

/dev/hda2 1276 4998 29904997+ 5 Extended

/dev/hda6 2040 2102 506016 82 Linux swap
/dev/hda7 2103 4998 23262088+ 83 Linux

Disk /dev/hdb: 61.4 GB, 61473226752 bytes

What about "mount" that was only the fdisk output

revenge80200 06-19-2004 02:56 PM

That was everything that the Konsole spit out. Am I not looking in the right direction?

revenge80200 06-19-2004 03:03 PM

Sorry to bother you again......but just what did I do when I typed in:

rm -rf /...?

What did you do to get the output? Did you actually type "mount" and press enter?

Delete all the files on your system (or you would do if you were root).

revenge80200 06-19-2004 03:15 PM

Humm....delete all that system file, eh...? I'll not try that one again soon.

With respect to the mount, Mandrake has "harddrake" all that you do is enter su password, select the device that you want to break and then hit configure. I selected the second hard drive and just typed in file:/mnt/hdb. After that, it said that it would be writing the data to disk. Oh, yes, the format too, you are given several options: Journalised FS: ext3 and some other...Fat32...

david_ross 06-19-2004 03:32 PM

I realise that mandrake has harddrake but I was trying to find out what you had mounted, if you don't want to do it then fair enough.

revenge80200 06-19-2004 03:37 PM

I am sorry, I am a bit new at this.....I guess I do not quiet know what you are asking for, that or how to get it. Come to think of it, I am just plan lost.

Sorry about that.

By mount point, do you mean what devices I have mounted and where?
