Some newbie questions: fonts, resolution and networking

Few questions from a Linux newbie (using Redhat 9.0)

1: How do I install TTF fonts?

2: Why is it that when I change my resoltion, I lose half the screen? Is there any way to change the res without losing anything?

3: I have a Linux box and a Windows XP laptop - what is the best way to connect the two so that I can share files between them and (if possible) use the internet connection I have on my XP laptop?

Thanks very much to whoever answers. :)

There are some options, soem of them are: samba (with GUI's: linneighborhood, gnomba - GNOME Samba browser
komba2 - KDE Samba browser
gnosamba - A graphical configuration utility for Samba).

Good luck. :)
I myself use linneighborhood, and it works for me.

1. Copy the fonts to your ~/.fonts directory. If it doesn't exist, just create it. Then run fc-cache -v

2. I don't quite understand what you mean...? Please elaborate. Do you get a virtual desktop larger than your physical area?

Thanks for the help guys. :) I got the fonts installed ok and I'm still looking in to the best way to connect the two machines.

Hakan - in reference to your question, when I increase the resolution, the desktop area extends past the edges of my monitor so things such as the taskbar are off the bottom of the screen and out of view. Can I fix this?

Ok, new question. Now that I got my fonts working in things like Open Office, I wanted to get them to work in The GIMP. I downloaded gimp-freetype, unzipped it and then went to the terminal. I typed in "./configure" as it asks me too but I get this message:

Quote:

The gimptool script installed by GIMP could not be found.
If GIMP was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in your path, or set the GIMPTOOL environment variable to the full path of the gimptool.

Configure: error: Cannot find GIMP: Is gimptool in path?
GIMP is in the normal directory it is installed to when installing Redhat 9, can anyone help me fix this problem? I really need to use my TTFs in GIMP.
