some linux distros not recognizing my cd rom

OK, so this isn't so much as a question, but more a statement i suppose. So i have a old e machine 433i with a samsung SC-140 cd rom drive. First i tried to load Mandrake 9.1, but couldn't recon the drive to do the install, so i downloaded 9.0 which worked fine. Them becoming a little less than happy with mandrake decided to dual boot mandrake and gentoo, but again to no avail, b/c the install would begin until it began checking hardware and it would say cd rom not found and the install would end there. Is there something i am missing here
