Some how messed up Source list I think

Hello,
I'm trying to learn Linux and received the below error message.

"Failed to Check for installed and available applications. This is a major failure of your software management system. Please check for broken packages w/synaptic. Check the file permissions and correctness of the file '/etc/apt/sources.list' and reload the software info with: 'sudo apt-get update' and 'sudo apt-get install -f'.

I was told by someone to type sudo apt-get install -f

and I received the following response.

E: Type 'dep' is not known on line 55 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list
E: The list of sources could not be read.

What do I do!! Thanks for any help.

The last line begins with "dep". change that to "deb" (without quotes) and that should fix it.
