Some help with Wine install

I'm trying to install Wine. I downloaded the tar.gz file and extracted it. Following the instructions, I go to the /tools directory and type ./wineinstall. The first time I tried it said "this is not advisable as root" and dumped me out.

So I tried again as a normal user and it gave me this error:

The source directory is not writable. You probably extracted the sources as root.
You should remove the source tree and extract it again as a normal user.

Any idea the best way to go about fixing this problem?

Thanks in advance.

i guess you could always find an rpm build of wine. make sure the rpm is built using the same version of glibc as yours. or you could delete the extracted directory and re-untar the tarball as a normal user.

I tried the rpm build first. I sorta worked but there seemed to be stuff missing. I got notepad working as a test, but that was about it. I couldn't find the ./install file and I went to the directory where system.ini & win.ini were supposed to be and only win.ini was there.

The problem as I see it is my source is not accessible as a normal user, but only as root. Wine won't install as root. I need to change permissions on source. I know to do chmod....but what exactly do I do chmod to.

Thanks all. This is a great forum. I don't usually ask too many questions because I can usually find my answers with a search. This one has me stumped though.
