Some Guidance Please!

First of all, I have to say that I am a newbie when it comes to Linux. After doing some "research" I chose Debian 3.1 Stable. I followed "THE PERFECT SETUP DEBIAN 3.1 SARGE".. Installation was succesfull, I have configured the system exactly as it says in the "tutorial". At this point, I'm kind of "stuck", not knowing what to do next! In the end, I want to set up a FTP Server. Are there any steps that i have to take before installing and configuring the FTP Server?
Thx in advance!

this is generally where you either have a crisis of faith and decide linux isn't for you or you go out and find a howto on installing an ftp server.

things you need for an ftp server to work..
the ftp server itself (look at vsftpd, pure-ftpd or wuftpd)
a working network card.
proabably missed something but these are the main ones - may come in handy as well. theres a whole host of howtos and whatnot.

have a crack at installing one of the ftp servers above and come back if you have any problems

at the moment, when linux boots, it shows all kinds of info. at one point it says "failed To Bring Up Eth0". does that mean that my network adapter isn't working?

Is your internet connection working? If so, then ignore the error message

Even if it still works it means there are problems somewhere and it's not a good idea to leave stuff unaddressed. Check the output of these two commands and see if there is anything that might point you to a problem.
cat /var/log/messages | grep eth0
