Some basic knowledge of Linux regarding directory structure

Hi,
Having tried out Mandrake and now fully converted to Red Hat 7.
3, I feel that its time to delve deep into linux. However, there are things that I am still confused about:

Could anyone please shed light on what each of the (default) directory does? I mean what does /bin, /var, /mnt, etc etc. have inside them. I have had a look around but still would like to have expert guidance...

Thankx in advance...

Well I am far from "expert guidance" but I can tell you a few of the obvious ones...

/var is where logs are kept, amongst other things, but as a rule of thumb, this is the log directory.

/bin is the BINARY directory, this is where executable programs that you install are kept, and scripts as well.

/mnt, well this one would be where you send everything to be mounted that isn't part of the native filesystem, ie CDROM's and such

/boot is where all the bootup information is kept like your kernel and such

/etc is where configuration files for your system are kept

/home is the home directory of normal users

/dev is where BLOCK DEVICES are located, this would most of your hardware

Those are vague answers, and not thought to be complete, but gives you a general idea anyway.

:) Your welcome, and most questions keep me on my toes, as I am still very much a newb myself.

If you are referring to the affero thing for rating replies and such, I am in the process of signing up. I will probably have it up a bit, and I will put a link in my sig.

Cool
