software or utility to catalog a directory

I am using ubuntu 8.04 with GNOME.

In windows xp I had 'virtual volumes view' which would create catalog of partition in graphical way & searchable for file or folder.
In catalog we can see file size.

I want to find alternative in ubuntu.

(1)I have noticed with du command output I can do

Code:
du -h -S
Still it shows size of folders (in some cases as 0 while correct in others of ntfs partition) so hard to distinguish directory from file.

(2) I like output of 'tree'. Wish it would append file size to the name.
