Hello. I am using fedora 20 64-bit. I often experience that a software I install and use smoothly for sometime suddenly start to cause trouble. When I try to run the program by clicking on its icon or using terminal, the interface that reveals at the beginnig of the program pops up. But then, the program window that should be seen on the screen doesn't come out, instead software is running hidden back somewhere, as I can see the icon of the software on the up-left corner of the screen and in the "activities" tab on the mid-left side of the screen,as it should be for any software running.Also I can understand that it is working as I take a look at the terminal window. I try to bring back the program window by left/right clicking on the icon but I failed. I should also add one more strange thing about it. When I tried to open the software in terminal as admin, the program used to run good. But if I try it without entering my root password, I am having the same trouble I mentioned above. But now, I also have a similar problem even if I run the software (in this case: matlab) after I enter my root password. GUI of the software appears, but when I try to use one of the application of the program, it seems like it's working as you see the icon of it inside "activites" tab, but the application window that should be seen normally doesnt seem. I'd be grateful if anybody help me. Thanks in advance

It sounds like it may be a gtk/qt related problem.

But I am not sure. If you have done any updates to the sys lately (even inadvertently).. then maybe something crept in, that should not have.

I use deb mostly, which has a 'list bug' program, which lets you know what possibly problems might arise, should you install the packages requested. It is not perfect, and there are other ways to check out software, BEFORE installing, that is more efficient.

Maybe the Fedora forums (here) might have seen this problem?

Sorry I could not be more specific.. but look back at your logs, for when you first started noticing the problems... to see what changes/updates occurred..and try to undo them.

When you say it started out in the users-only logins.. but then spread to root-user.. it could be you just infected yourself (root) with the other config files (or other files) that have the problems, but it took it's time to manifest.
