Software Installations???

DOes linux have the ability to install IBM compatible software? Or do i need to install software that is specifically designed for Linux systems?

Tinkster 07-19-2003 01:05 AM

What exactly do you mean when you say
"IBM compatible software"? Software that
runs on AIX? OS/390? OS/2? Software that
in some way runs on what's called an IBM
compatible PC (please note that there's
dependencies with the operating system,
as OS/2, DOS, WindowsNT ;})?

Cheers,
Tink

http://www.winehq.com/?page=about

yes it is possible
the link is to the about page of a package called wine
read up on what it can do
it may fit your needs

I am using RH 9

mhearn 07-19-2003 11:18 AM

You actually mean microsoft compatible.

Wine can be used, but as a last resort, it doesn't always work.

jayrule57 07-19-2003 01:14 PM

Basically, as of now, I can only install software made for Linux (to be stable) right?

mhearn 07-19-2003 01:21 PM

Like I said, you can try Wine if you really need this program, with some elbow grease you may be able to get it to work. Likewise if this is for business, you could pay a wine hacker to concentrate on your app.

If you don't want to do that, then you are correct, yes. Luckily, there is enough software for Linux out there, that it will easily meet almost all your needs.
