software installation issue
 

Hello,

i am a very new guy to linux.heard about the linux some years ago,however came to use linux from this time onward.i am having a large sort of problem from the installation issue to using the software..i am unaware if i can use all the software which are supported in windows or is there any equivalent for the same...plz guide me regarding the same.

Linux is not a clone of Windows; it's a complete operating system with programs and utilities that let you do work that needs done. It doesn't look, feel or act the same as Windows (thankfully).

There are many, many applications available for Linux for accomplishing whatever it is you need to do; e.g., LibreOffice http://www.libreoffice.org/ is a complete, free office system that, among other things, will open and allow editing of almost all Microsoft Office files plus produce PDF files for you. Did I mention free?

You cannot install Windows programs on a Linux system (or vice-versa), they are completely incompatible and that's all there is to it. You can, however, with free software such as Wine http://www.winehq.org/, install a Windows application (in Wine) and use it on a Linux system -- not all Windows applications, but quite a few. Additionally, you can install free virtual machine software, such as VirtualBox, and then install Window in a virtual machine and simply start it when needed then shut it down when not -- the virtual machine runs in Linux only when you need it.

^^ As well as what operating system and/or desktop environment you have. As well as having many programs to be installed, there can be many ways to install them.

Windows is a user friendly operating system whereas most of the distribution of linux are used for enterprise or organization use.
The kernel used for developing both the OS are different.

the software which are installed in windows are .exe format and in linux .exe extension is considered as a normal file.

This is one of the reason linux is considered much more secure than windows as most of the virus or trojan are simply considered as file in linux which can be manually deleted very easily.

There is a different procedure which needs to be followed while installing a software depending upon the type of software, distribution you are using and many other things

a) having free SW? Which ones?
b) learning linux?
c) dont love windows anymore?
d) you have a precise work to do? Install an operating system on a PC you got free of charge..
.. please give few explanation. Then we will understand where/how to help
Perhaps you could speak with a friend or a colleague or your best pc shop or your family members: they can probably help very quick, too.
