Which one is supported? What do you mean by that? And to install the packages use the package manager YUM. It will download and install the packages that are supported on your architecture.
If you have not got the RH subscription, then you will need to change the repositories and add CentOS5 repos.
Else you can download the packages from the net either in tar or rpm format and install them.
Office is available in bin format that you can install just by making the file executable and then double clicking it.

If you will name a Linux program and if it is in your distribution's software repository, I can tell you if it is supported by RHEL 5. In fact, here is a brilliant script I wrote that automatically gives the answer, for any Linux software package currently available in your distribution's repository:

Code:
#!/bin/sh

echo "YES."
Go ahead, run it. Then, using its guidance, install the package:

Code:
# yum install (package-name)
See? My automatic compatibility detector program was right. Either the package name isn't in the YUM repository, or it installs successfully.

Spell out your words, please.

They are both supported. However, which "media player" are you talking about? If you mean the one that Windows has, no...that's a Windows program. Under Linux, you've got numerous options...kaffeine, totem, xine, and mplayer are just a few.

Since you're paying for RedHat Enterprise, you can search their knowledgebase, or contact their support, and they can walk you through installation, and tell you where the packages are.

hi ubuntu
fritz the newbe here!

I can start of by saying that I have ran ubuntu on a rig i built for myself a few years ago. my nephew talked me into using ubuntu in the microsoft 98 setup. it ran good but i just didn't understand ubuntu very well. all these years have passed and i'm steel building rigs for others and repairing them also for people too. most of the rigs i get for repare don'have any os and didn't have a copy when the people got the rig given to them or they bought from someone that did not give them a os with the rig. I had a real problem with this as I didn't want to bootleg my microsoft os. ao they would ether have to buy a copy of microsoft os or they would find someone to bootleg a os for them. so about 2 weeks ago I have just started to install ubuntu into the systems that I get for repair, useualy ubuntu over xp. these people don't have the money to even have the thing repaired at a comp. shop and the most of there problems steem fron running a bootleg copy of microsoft. I just fixed a rig for a lady that has 3 daughters and a son in afganistan. I installed kubuntu into there rig and they really like it, but it took a week for me to figure out how to install it and I don't think i got it right because I can't get a cam working or there hp printer but they like it. while i was setting up there rig i started to like ubunto also. yes i got the ubuntu bug and I have to have it in my system. the only problem I can't bet the ubuntu 8.04 hardy hearon lts to install. I copyed a disk from ubuntu web site and I also have a copy of it from ubuntu that i bought from bestbuy a few years ago. I was supprised they had it and they had a whole shelf full of copys of ubuntu. I didn't bring enough money to buy acopy right then so i cam back the next day and they only had one copy left so i bought it and that is the copy that I tryed to install but it wouldn't work just like the copy from the ubuntu web site did. with my rig I can only get as far as the ubuntu progress bar at the begining fo the software. I'm running a mis k9a2 mobo, 9550 amd phenom quadcore, 2 500gig hdd wd (vista and xp), 4gig 8oo speed ram, a asus en9600gt pci e card, a 22in.WH monitor with a 46in. sony tv. The hdd with vista messed up bad when i tryed to install ubuntu so I bought a nother 5oogig hdd wd blue lable and istalled xp but it wont install anything but the progress bar. on the other rig I'm not sure what I installed but the kubuntu with 8.4 over xp. in other words i.m not sure if i used wubi or what it just downloaded and took off working after a manage to figure out about packets and snapic but can't install the packages so you can use them i don't understand that part in kbuntu or the 8.4 hardy ether. so here is a light summery of the 2 rigs that I am working with.

ladyfiend- biostar mcp6p m2+ w. intergrated sound and video, 320gig wd hdd, 2gigs 8oo speed ram, amd athlon 2 2.9ghz. ubuntu 8.4 & kubuntu over xp pro 64bit os.
problem cant get the loaded packets to work, can't get the printer to work and can't get the cam to work, but plays youtube and google video, 430 watt psu. ide drives and floppy. hdd is a sata.

my rig. msi k9a2 mobo, amd phenom quad core 2.2ghz, asus en9600gt 512 mb ddr3 pci e card, creative blaster x-fi extreme fidelity x-ram 64mb sound card, 4 gig ddr2 8oo speed ram, 550 watt psu, 1 ide cdrom rw, 2 dvd cdrom wr sata drives, 1 floppy drive, 2 wd 500gig hdd (white lable w. 64bit vista & some ubuntu) and (500gig wd blue lable with 64bit xp pro and no ubuntu) I would like to run one drive in vista and the orher drive in ubuntu full install over xp.

3rd rig is a sony pvc-rx670 with 1.8 p4 pentium, ddr333 1gig, intergrated sound, a 64mb video card with nvida chips on it. its all stock exept the ram and 80gig wd ide. this rig is running with my xp pro right now and runs really good for a free rig. I have a ower for it already (another needy mother with a son and a daughter) and I want to put ubuntu in it also. I think the agp card mite be a 128mb i'm not sure though. the people next door had it setting in there closet for a year of better because it quit running. it didn't have any ram or hdd and they didn't know what kind of agp card it had in it. they said that they bought it new back in 2002 or 2003 and paid 2500.00 for it new from betbuy.

well I hope that this isn't post isn't to long and I hope you have enough info to help me get these rigs going.
fritz

so here we are and you know what i'm working with

Not too long, but in someone elses thread. Please open your own thread for your own questions.

Also, we'll be glad to help you get things going. If you're having specific problems, please post them, along with any and all information you have about the problem, and we can help you work through it.

Also to add on TBOne, use some well punctuation and paragraphs and tags that are available. Code and quote tags can make your post more readable. Your post is not just too long but difficult to read. Instead of spending time on helping you, members would actually need a lot of time to read it and understand it better. The outcome, less responses and replies.

As I said in my first post, Windows media player isn't supported...it's a WINDOWS program. But I mentioned several others that work fine, and play the same content. You can even install RealPlayer if you want to, just visit their website and download it.

And what do you mean by multimedia presentation?? Powerpoint? Audio? Video?? You can run OpenOffice, which has support for Powerpoint presentations.

You said "I downloaded file from net"...it would be helpful if you told us exactly WHAT you downloaded. And was it an RPM, or a tar file? What do you mean by "formats and run it"???

If you have RedHat Enterprise, I'd strongly suggest you contact RedHat support, since you're paying for it. They can walk you through things over the phone, and help get you going.

Sorry, have no idea what a "smil player" is.

And if you read my first post, I mentioned several in it, by name.

As said before, windows media player is a WINDOWS package. But you can install real player, quicktime, or vlc. Most of them are supported on Linux. Use YUM to install your player

yum install vlc will install vlc player for your distribution. You need to do nothing more than this.
Once it is installed you can use it from terminal. Or it could also get installed in Applications > Sound and video.

Anything specific that you need to know? I do not understand presentation part. What presentations do you do?
