Soft Boot -> No Sound / Hard Boot = Sound .... Strange

I just recently installed Debian 6 on my main desktop after test driving it for awhile on my netbook. So far I am loving it.The strange thing is the upon original install the driver that was picked up would only load on a hard boot. It also had a dead sound so I went to Realtek, I installed that driver which gave me improved quality but the same weird issue.

Is the process different from hard boot vs. soft ? The only thing I can think of is GRUB but I am not sure what to do. :newbie:

A hard boot is different than a soft boot in the respect that the computer devices undergo the power on self test (POST) during a hard boot. This should reset initial starting values taken from the firmware to the various components. When I have investigated device problems I have always regarded a hard boot as a reliable means of setting initial device states. A soft boot is not a reliable means of resetting device states.

Sounds logical. Any suggestions on correction ? :scratch:

It's not a huge deal just a little bit of a pain.

You could investigate whether the device has an available firmware update. I have no other ideas.
