Question so i have a kernel and i want to use it.

hey.
i just downloaded the winRAR file patch-2.6.30.5.bz2 from kernel.org. I'm not sure if i want to switch to linux for good, so how would i put the kernel on a usb jump drive and boot from that? and what features are on this kernel (are any programs included?) any help would be great. for reference im using a HP DV9500 notebook. and a lexar 2 gb jump drive formatted with vista.

That file is not an operating system...it isn't even a kernel for an operating system, it is just one of the patches that are used when building the kernel.

If you want to try out Linux, or more accurately a distribution of GNU/Linux, from USB then you need something like SLAX which has a USB option. Or you can use software to convert an existing live CD into a USB image.

I like Ubuntu. You can download/install a winrar package afterwards.
