so far so good, but how long will this take me?
Hi, new newbie here :)
So far so good, I have RedHat Linux 9 installed on my main system, dual boot (although Grub won't boot XP for some reason). Although I would have installed it on another box had I known I'd be staring at a read-only NTFS partition. I have dual monitors setup with X (XF86Config took about two hours and a half to figure out). Found and installed an MP3 Plugin for XMMS (20 minutes or so). Took about an hour to set up MIDI playback with XMMS because of confusing documentation and I had to find a mirror because of a downed site. Didn't get samba working yet. Totally confused by that -- I think it may be a problem with my Windows comps & NetBIOS. Installed Opera, much better to work with than Mozilla. Looks nicer in Windows though. So, based on my progress, how long do you think it will take before I can actually do something useful? For example, use my firewire scanner, tv tuner, dvdrom, learn to use apps that replace Microsoft Outlook, Adobe PhotoShop, DriveCrypt encryption program, Windows Media player, a photo album viewer, backup and synchronization software, multi-track audio recording software. Also obtain a program to access my yahoo email by pop3 (YahooPops in Windows) and an application to limit bandwith to certain applications (NetLimiter does this in Windows). Also there would be special stuff, like getting my mobile phone and pocket pc to have data syncrhonized (if even possible). Big job ahead :study: ..Or maybe I shoudl just use Linux for browsing and mp3s :( |

while :) not knowing the tuner card I can't make any guess, DVD rom should be no sweat, I got three different ones working well ... besides that ... probably as long as it took me to give up trying to get winblows to play with my IBM ISA TokenRing16/4II, ADAPTEC AHA-2940U2W, SB64AWE Gold, ELSA Winner 2000/Office, 2 Voodoo II's, ELSA ISDN Adapter ... just wouldn't work, none of the winDOHses back in the day did. Linux did. So here I am. :) As for your Software: find Linux-Pendants. http://freshmeat.net is a very good starting point. Outpuke is evil. Try gimp for PhotoShop, there is a variety of encryption tools on various levels available ... from a simple per-file encryption to encrypting file-systems (using loop-back interfaces). pocket pc ... WinCE? :Q Cheers, Tink |
Sounds like you're way ahead of the game already. My advice would be to take each one of your lingering problems and try to solve them one at a time. Some of the things you're interested in doing are a little more complicated than just "one-click solutions", but are definitely do-able. Others are fairly simple (Outlook and WMP alternatives, dvd-rom players).
Given that you've figured out most of the usual newbie problems by yourself, I doubt you'll be unable to do what you want. Just do a little research (google is your friend) and post anything you can't figure out here. Just don't try and solve 10 things at once, get frustrated, and give up. |
