smtp server
 

this sort of goes with my other long going post about my mail server

it works now! did some firewall fiddling and it works. now what i want to do is send email from my email client (thunderbird) and send it out as is if came from my mail server. right now my only outgoing mail server typed into my thunderbird client is the one from my ISP. i don't want people i email using my website emails to see it coming from there.

so i figure the best thing to do is use my server as an outgoing SMTP server. im just curious abuot how to set this up? im using postfix and dovecot

You can use either one or the other.
They all have their special strenghs.
There are even others.

Once you decide whichone to use you can use, it's specific manual will tell you how to set it up.

This should not be too hard.

IfI understand you previous posts correctly, your thunderbird machine is remote from the server (ie you will want to connect from the internet.

at the pop-before-smtp section. What you need to be careful of is that you don't create an open relay - spammers will love you and the VPS guys will hate you.

What pop-before-smtp does is effectively require you to log on with POP before postfix will relay mail for you. This means that you have to have a valid username and password.

There may be other ways around it, but take note of the open relay point above.

I haven't tried pop-before-smtp myself though.

Edit - Also note, that you will need to adjust your firewall again to allow for pop or imap connections in this setup.

Also, you should think about using pops or imaps to avoid sending plain text passwords of the net.
