Smoothwall DHCP
 

Hi, I am new to Linux/Smoothwall and was wondering if it was possible to setup Smoothwall so that it gets an IP from the DHCP Server (my hardware router), is this possible? if so, how?

ok i'm piping up because no one else seems to be. I installed smoothwall on a box a home for a work research project. I can't remember for sure but i don't think it will obtain its ip through DHCP. I could be wrong. But if this is the case, it is probably possible(but compicated) to set up dhclient, but i think it would be easier to just use a static ip. Is there a reason that you absolutely need a static IP?

thanks for replying man, I want it to use an IP from DHCP from my hardware router cause I don't have a USB/PCI ADSL modem, so I can enable ZIPB mode which will make the hardware router pass the ISP IP onto the smoothwall, I just need the smoothwall to take a DHCP IP :(

well, i don't have it up anymore so i can't really plug around with it to see how to edit the startup scripts. who knows i might get motivated. well before that happens let me first say that i could be TOTALLY WRONG about smoothwall. like i said i installed it like 2 weeks ago and mulled around with it for a couple of days. but let me point you in a direction at least. i'm going to go look around the smoothwall sight. do you happen to know what distrobution its based on? look in /etc/rc.d/ for like rc.inet1 or something like that. let me know what you come up with. but it does involve running dhcpcd at startup.

Yes, smoothwall can get it's IP address via DHCP. Login as SETUP and it's under networking / address settings / RED. Select DHCP.
