smbpasswd configuration file

where is the smbpasswd configuration file located. i have searched it with google. Somebody explains that the smb passord is store in the file /etc/samba/smbpasswd.
However, on my Fedora 9, the /etc/samba/smbpasswd file does not exists, but the samba password system works well. Why does this happen? Is the password stored in other files?

Hi,

It should be in '/etc/samba and the passwd in '/etc/samba/smbpasswd_file, unless you specify otherwise in the 'smb.conf'.

The 'Samba-Guide' is a good place to look.

This link and others are available from 'Slackware-Links'. More than just SlackwareŽ links!

I had used the following command to find the file smbpasswd.
Code:

find / -name smbpasswd
The output of the command is
Code:

/usr/bin/smbpasswd
I count not find the smbpasswd file. But the samba password system works fine. Why it happens?

/usr/bin/smbpasswd is the command to give your users samba passwords. You manually create the file. Then when you issue the command the passwords are stored in the password file.

Look at your '/etc/samba/smb.conf' to see where your password file is stored.

Sorry about my file specification error, it should have shown the '/etc/samba/smbpasswd_file'. I did note after that you should look at the '/etc/samba/smb.conf' to see where the file is stored and the name.

My bad!
