SMB Printing to PSC 1210v

My current status is that I am able to get jobs to the print queue on the XPH
machine that the HP PSC 1210v is connected to via USB. I am watching the print
queue via VNC as well as the one my Linux machine. The jobs show up on the XP printer queue as:

Document Name: Remote Downlevel Document
Status: Printing
Owner: Guest
Pages: N/A
Size: 64.0 KB/3.68 MB

However, it does not print. The power button/light flashes and the printer
hangs and ALL (including Windows) jobs just stack up in the queue. The only way
to clear the first job in the queue is to reset the printer.

I checked the HP website and it appears there may be a newer driver, but it is
packaged as 166MB download, and I only have dialup, so I am going to hold off
ordering the CD until I have some indication that is the solution.

The printer is connnected to a PC running XP Home with all of the current
patches. I have enabled guest access and when I set up the printer, I set it for
guest.

The Linux box that I am attempting to print from is running MEPIS 2004.05b05
with the 2.4 kernel. Using SMB4K I can see the printer and mount it. I used the
KDEPrint Configure utility to set up the printer. There are not many options
that weren't self-explanatory, but I may have missed something.

I appreciate any assistance. I am a relative newby, so if you need me to check
versions, etc. please give me some idea of how. Thanks.

Bump. Come on Linux gurus, help me out. If you can't print, Linux is not very useful.

This printer is only partially supported in Linux.

You can't scan with it...so it really isn't worth the setup in Linux.

I gave this one a try about 4 months ago and only had partial functionality. Searched on the web and found that there is no real driver for it.

Thanks for the reply. We using mapping to it via SMB? Did you ever get it to do basic printing? The research that I did said that it was supported under SANE to scan. I just want to be able to do basic printing (B&W would be fine) across the network.

on another note, are you running a firewall on the xp machine?

Yep, printing was fine...I just didn't want to have to do anything else to hook up the scan and copy function...especially when I could just hook it up to a USB Printer Server and throw it onto wireless. I mostly do server stuff for Linux so it suited me just fine. It'd be nice if manufacturers actually started to understand that Linux is on the beginnings of an explosion and that they better get on the ride or it will leave them behind.

Do you have any advice for me on my problem? I can get the print job into the queue on the XP machine, but it hangs leaving the printer with the green light flashing. I have to turn the printer off and back on to clear it. Do I need to upgrade CUPS or something else? I am running the out-of-the-box MEPIS 2004-05 2.4 kernel installation.

I did look at that page. I did not know how to check my version of CUPS or the driver. Also, none of those posts discussed SMB printing and I was not sure which portion of their feedback would be relevant to my situation. KPackage shows that there are several diffent cups-related updates. It appears that the hpijs I have installed is the current one. There are also some smb updates available. I have installed a few things, but not done any updates since I got this system. I am reluctant to hose my system, but I would like the print. Any should I update the cups and smb/samba packages that are available, or just the minimum cups stuff that appears relevant? Don't worry, I won't gripe if it blows up, but I don't want to create more problems than I solve. I am on the road with access to high-speed (which I don't have at home) so it is a good time for me to download. Thanks.

i'm usually of the frame of mind to fix things, rather than updating. what does your /etc/cups/printers.conf look like. on another note, do you have the appropriate *ppd file?

looking at this

DeviceURI smb://linghome_share:sharepoint@LINGHOME/DIANE/PRINT$

this should look more like

DeviceURI smb://usernameassword@workgroup/computername/printername

what does

smbclient -L ip of windows machine

return? i'm thinking your path is incorrect.

Here is what I got from the smbclient commands:

I am not familiar with the command, so I didn't know what to expect, but it looks like it works with the computer name, but not with the IP address. If you take a look at your last reply, you will see that it put in a smiley that hosed up the URI, so I am not sure what you mean. I think that my line matches yours unless you literally mean username and password. linghome_share and sharepoint are the login and password. I am back at home now and can check settings and apply fixes.

the last part of the uri concerned me most,

LINGHOME/DIANE/PRINT$

PRINT$ is not the shared printer, this is your shared printer

root@1[root]# smbclient -L diane
Password:
Domain=[DIANE] OS=[Windows 5.1] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager]

Sharename Type Comment
--------- ---- -------

root@1[root]#

hope that gets you pointed in the right direction.
good luck.
