SMB Error : Kernal Reporting smb_get_length: Invalid NBT packet ,code=fd

Hai,

We are facing some problem with the samba mount that we have in our production server. Our server set up is as follows

samba client :-
OS :- RHEL 4
kernal version 2.6.9-5.ELsmp
samba client samba-client-3.0.10

Remote File Server :-
OS :- Win 2003 Server (SP1)

Initial mount and other operations(r/w) are working fine , but after some hours usally during heavy read/write operations we are facing I/O error and the kernal is reporting "Invalid NBT packet" with code=fd followed by smb_add_request timed out.Can any one help me in figuring out what triggered the "Invalid NBT packet" error ,what this code=fd means and how to rectify this.Any response is appreciated.

Thanks & Regards,
UKN

I don't use samba often, nor in a large environment so I'm purely speculating here, but at the bottom of the man page it states:

[qoute]
One smbfs bug is important enough to mention here, even if it is a bit
misplaced:

o Mounts sometimes stop working. This is usually caused by smbmount
terminating. Since smbfs needs smbmount to reconnect when the server
disconnects, the mount will eventually go dead. An umount/mount nor-
mally fixes this. At least 2 ways to trigger this bug are known.
[/quote]

Also try mounting with cifs rather than smbfs as this seems to fix issues for some.
mount -t cifs -o ...
