Small Easy linux for VERY low end PC
 

Here's my PC configuration:

• 128 mb DDR2 RAM
• 40 GB HDD
• 16 mb onboard graphic card
• Intel Pentium 4
• no cd or DVD writer
• celeron CPU 1.8 GHz

Iam currently using windows XP sp2 And now iam tired of it running too slow and frequent hangs so iam shifting to linux i know nothing about linux

I have the following expectations from the new OS

• It should run smoothly on my PC
• normal pC usage such as web browsing and other tasks
• less than 500 mb
• better from windows
• a better User Interface

How about Puppy? It's easy to use and there's a USB image if you have no access to a CD burner at all.

Speaking of "Tiny Core" - I'm not sure it will serf Web smoothly, but it is very quick for your specs.

Increase your RAM to 512mb+ and you can run any Linux distro you want. Ubuntu, Mint, and Puppy are very popular with first-time Linux users. Good luck! :)

Linux always does better than xp in these.

If you give us definition in what you think is *better*.

Puppy, slitaz, xpud, vector and I am sure more than a few others.

I started with Linux running Slackware 10.0 on an IBM PC300 (first generation Pentium 300 MHz chip) with 256 MB RAM.

It ran fine--a little slow, but faster than my P3 ran XP. The one limitation was that the first generation Pentium chip could not deal with video, though it was fine with audio.

I second snowpine's recommendation to buy more RAM. RAM is cheap these days and is the cheapest and easiest way to improve performance. I recently upped this P4 from 512 MB to 4 GB RAM and it has made a world of difference.

With a little more RAM, you should be able to run just about anything on that box. Get a nice USB external CD/DVD reader/writer and you will be set. Dalco sells nice reliable stuff cheap.

One question though: Is it a P4 or a Celeron? They aren't the same, but, if you're not planning to do heavy-duty scientific calculations, it probably doesn't matter all that much.
