slow with 256Mb

My computer is running very slowly . Can it be the instalation (2.2Gb) or something else ? i have 256Mb of ram , 750Mz athlon processor. I would also like to know if i installing less packages would affect performance . I have a swap of 750Mb and i already tried 1Gb but it seems to be slower as you widen the swap space why is that ? sometimes boards actually disappear for a brief second when they are at some task . i´m saying this because on windows it seems a bit faster . can you help ?

Peace!
