Slow web browsing problem

Im currently dual booting between Slackware 9.1 and Windows XP Home. I have been noticing lately that when I am on Slackware and browsing the internet, it is going VERY slow compared to when I browse the web on Windows. I have a cable modem, and under windows it loads websites almost instantly. On Slackware, it takes 30-45 seconds, maybe even several minutes to load a website. Now, I have done alot of testing, and I know that it is a problem with my machine and not the remote websites Im trying to connect to. I have tried connecting to a list of sites on Slackware, and then the same list with Windows, and the connection speeds on Windows were ridiculously faster. I am wondering if anyone could maybe suggest some settings that might be causing this lack of performance.

Also, as a side note... download speeds on Slackware are very good. I have been downloading alot of software lately and I can consistantly break 350mbps downloading files. However, even while Im downloading this fast, other websites load very slowly.

That may be a problem with DNS lookups, or
firewall rules ... hard to say from your description,
and without further background info.

Cheers,

Well what other kind of info would you guys need? I am very new to linux so Im not sure what this problem really involves. Im currently running the Firestarter firewall. I can find out any other info though if someone can just tell me what they need to know.

I have continued to do some research, and found out that there might be a problem with my DNS cache (I think thats what it was...). Anyway, it said to dig a site once, then dig it again and your response time should be significantly better the second time. Unfortunately, mine was not. Here are my results from digging www.google.com 3 times:

As you can see, my query time was not only horrible each time, but it didnt improve either. So, next it said to check and see if I was getting any errors when I ran ifconfig, and here is the output from that:

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr <EDITED OUT>
inet addr:<EDITED OUT> Bcast:255.255.255.255 Mask:255.255.240.0
UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:71755 errors:5279 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:13565 errors:1 dropped:0 overruns:1 carrier:0
collisions:229 txqueuelen:100
RX bytes:9721929 (9.2 Mb) TX bytes:1955564 (1.8 Mb)
Interrupt:11 Base address:0xe800

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:10 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:10 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:420 (420.0 b) TX bytes:420 (420.0 b)

Now, I may not be a linux guru, but the line:

RX packets:71755 errors:5279 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:

contains 5279 errors. Thats probably not a good thing Im guessing. So maybe this might be my problem?

It's not a good thing, but it's not necessarily
the reason for the performance. How about
double-checking /etc/resolv.conf and make
sure the name-servers are correct. And see
whether your firewall blocks anything DNS
related.

I have the same problem. I need minutes to load a web page.

ping google.com : 107 ms
dig google.com : 12 ms
http://www.google.com in Firebird : more than a minute

The same hardware gave normal results under Mdk 9.1 with kernel 2.4

I am behind a NAT router, but so is my other PC, and that one does not have any problem (running XP)

If I bypass the router by plugging into the modem, it does not get better.

My ifconfig says :

[root@linolivier nwn]# ifconfig eth0
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:08:A1:2D:9C:8A
inet addr:192.168.0.3 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::208:a1ff:fe2d:9c8a/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:9998 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:7304 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:12215071 (11.6 Mb) TX bytes:734653 (717.4 Kb)
Interrupt:19 Base address:0x6000

My /etc/resolv.conf says :

nameserver 194.19.194.9
nameserver 194.255.56.78
nameserver 212.66.1.1

What more information should I provide ?

It seems to have helped some.

But I still have a big difference if I ping google.com or the direct IP address : so I still have a resolution problem somewhere...
