Red face Slow Server Help

I run a RH 8 Server and for the last 3 days now it's been terribly slow when I try to access it from work or from another computer at home.

I'm still pretty new to Linux.. so was wondering if anyone would be willing to give me a checklist of things I could look for that could be making it slow. I'm afraid of that darn alleged hacker attack that might have happened last sunday...

My system monitor seems to be using hardly any CPU, and my hard drives are fairly empty still. (80 gig primary 80 gig backup drive)

My main URL is http://www.cynthiablue.net, and I run two other domain names off it. I also have a Postfix mail server. If I get large emails my email client is timing out and I cannot pick up the email.

Thanks for any help...

Perhaps the /var partition (you do have a separate /var if you are running a server, don't you?) is getting too full. Have you cleaned out your old rotated logs in /var/log after checking them?

Yup I have a /var partition... and I will check that for sure thank you. Thanks for the links too, I will spend some time looking at them.

I have not cleaned out my old logs since the server was set up... which has been oh... about 6 months now.

Also, I have Tripwire on the system, and this morning it sent me an email saying the Tripwire DB is no longer there. Hrm... we had some problems last night with the Cisco DSL Modem... it was kicking my husband off, so he rebooted it, we shut all the computers down.. when we turned the network computers back on, all the internal IP addresses had changed. He thought that was odd as he has them set to be on a 1 year lease.

As for Tripwire though... ever since I set it up I've been getting many messages saying files have changed, and in my inexperience and lack of knowledge, I don't know which are valid, and which are not... better go read up on that too.

Thanks.
