Slow internet connection on my laptop
 

Hi there. I recently installed Ubuntu 5.10 as the second OS on my laptop (Dell Latitude D610), the first OS being Win XP Pro.

My problem is that that it takes a comparatively longer time to load web pages on Ubuntu than it does on Windows. I had a similar problem with my old laptop when I had Fedora Core 4 installed on it. The problem in that case seemed to be that my router was configured so that it would act as a nameserver. When I disabled this option, everything was ok. Unfortunately, I can't do this right now because I am staying in a hotel.

As the next best thing, I thought to comment out the ip address of the router in
/etc/resolv.conf (this also worked with my old laptop). Initially, the pages seemed to load faster. But then I noticied in Firefox's status bar that it was taking a long time to load a web page even after name resolution. To be fair, this didn't seem to be a consistent problem between web pages: some loaded much faster than others.

Does anybody have any idea what the problem might be? I am connecting to the internet through an Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BC Network Connection card.

Thanks for the link. I took a quick read through and tried to figure out what the hell is wrong.

Anyway, I don't think it's a DNS problem. nslookup is quick with all lookups for addresses. Also, when I changed to public NS servers in resolv.conf, I didn't notice much of a difference in speed.

What I think is happening is that for some reason my download rates are relatively slower; it takes a noticeably longer time to render pages than it does on Windows. And I would guess that pages that need to load data from external sites take the longest. I also say this because I tried to download a file as a test and I was getting rates of 20 - 30 kb/sec.

Anyway, it's not the end of the world and it's much better than dial up. I still think that there's something fishy about the way the router interacts with Ubuntu. But as I said I am in a hotel and my hands are tied.

I need to do a control. Download another browser; try with Ethernet; find another access point; If anyone has any other ideas though, I would love to hear them.

P.S. The article also mentioned the problem might be due to a software firewall. I couldn't find anything that indicated that in a default install of Ubuntu. Is there one?

I have the very same pb as you. I just install the ubuntu 5.10 on my thinkpad. evrything works fine, but the internet browsing is very slow although I have a ethernet connection... did you solve the pb? do you have new idea about what we could do about that?
