Angry Slow INTERNET connection

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
Hello all,

I've just switch over from window last night. Did a fresh install of ubuntu v9.04, which is download from their site. Everything look great except for my internet connection. I am able to connect to the INTERNET but the speed is very very slow. And it seem like the internet time out and hang alot.

One thing that I see is that when i use the network tool to try and ping a sever I would get a error saying address cannot be found then I would try again and get no error and try again I would get a partial complete.

I also notice that when i download a file it would stop for a period of 2-3 min then continue and stop and continue then it would get time out.

When browsing the browser would get stuck at looking for www.yahoo.com for a good min or so before going to the site. Sometime it would get past this and take about 2-3 min to load one page.

I am using an Intel Gigabit Ethernet controller that come with my Intel mobo. I am connecting to the internet with a wired connection to a linksys router.

This slowness with the internet only appear on my computer. My sister computer connecting to the same router using wireless is 10x time faster. She is running window. For my ethernet I am using the newest driver e1000e.

I been google this problem all day but found nothing.

Any tip or advice is greatly appreciate. I use the internet greatly and this slowness is driving me nut. Please help!!!

I dont think it its an issue with the OS :| Might be a net issue.Best thing to do would be download some file in windows and see the downloadspeed and do the same from ubuntu and check the download speed again.

How did you configure your network? From the gnome's network manager tool? Do you use DHCP or static?

Can you post /etc/resolv.conf...it might be DNS issue, if so, try OpenDNS.

THank for the reply.

I did switch to window and the speed is way faster. Download at average 800KBs.

I don't think it a network setting problem. I took the router out of the loop and connect straight to the modem and got very fast speed.

So maybe something is conflicting with the router. I am using a Linksys wireless N broaband router. To make sure I didnt mess up and setting I reset the router and did not change anything and only enable wireless internet. This computer however is connecting straight to the router using wire connection.

Here is the resol.conf:

#Generate by Network Manager
Domain beaverton.or.bverton.comcast.net
Search beaverton.or.bverton.comcast.net
nameserver 4.2.2.1

I am 'Network Connection' that came with ubuntu and using Automatic (DHCP) addresses only setting with dns 4.2.2.1

Also when i am connection straight to the modem I dont experience connection hang. For example, when I try to add a program from the Add and Remove, the file would download for 30 section then stop for 2 or3 min (like it stop connecting) then download for another 30sec or so stop.

I add in the two dns for openDns and the browsing seem a bit faster. But the download is still the same. I get alot of hang time when download. The strange thing is the download doesnt get dis-connect just hung and resume

Also after adding the openDNS into the connection, the browsing is better but still take a while at looking up www.something.com or "waiting for www.something.com" but page load very fast after that.

I tried to download ubuntu from their website to test the download speed. The download did not get even start. Looking at the download window the download just stay at Starting.... When i look at the network monitor, there were no network traffic.
