Slow Internet access

I have Ubuntu 10.4 with LinuxCNC running. My internet is running very slow, times out. It has connected once or twice in many tries. I can ping my windows machine and outside addresses. please point me in the right direction I am totally ignorant of Linux connectivity.

thanks
Paul

Did it ever work correctly? Has anything changed?

What is it connected to? DSL or Fiber or what?

Can you use tools to report connection speeds and nic settings?

New installation never worked right

dsl - called Century tel they checked modem and it is working properly, Win7 laptop works well

System monitor shows speeds of 200-400 Bytes (that right, bytes!) every few seconds

Nic settings
ip 192.168.0.2
mask 255.255.255.0
gw 192.168.0.1
dns 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4

Waste of time to call ISP. (sorry, had to say that) They are usually no help to anyone anywhere.

Does W7 report 200-400 M bytes also? So that would be about 2K to 4K mega bit.

What speed do you pay for? Assume much less on dsl. They never give you what they claim you "could" get.

Also what are you downloading? How are you downloading what?

When you say windows 7 works, it is a separate computer? Correct?
Might test a live cd/dvd/usb on it to double check.

OK<

Now for solutions maybe.

I think I'd look at the command line tool called top. It may tell you system load or cup use is high.

Do you have enough ram or is swap being used too much?

How old is this system?

inet connection is fine, win7 laptop connected to same router whizzes along

the sytem is 3yrs old. It ran well until I decided to reload Linux - forgetting the pains I had getting it to network the first time. Top is cool - lots of ram left- no swapping

Firefox has connected 2 out of 100's of tries (well lots) it times out. Synaptic was able to download Samba, it took all morning and many restarts. All networking is slow

Since you resolved the problems before, they can certainly be resolved again. Can you remember anything about what worked the last time?

Please provide some additional background.

It this a wired or wireless connection? If wireless, have you tested wired?

What is your ethernet/wireless chipset?

This looks strange to me. Are you saying that 8.8.8.8 is your primary DNS and 8.8.4.4 is your secondary?

What is the output of ifconfig? For readability, please surround it with "code" tags, which become available when you click the "Go Advanced" button to the right of the "Quick Reply" button beneath the compose message window.

Wired, the cable worked in the past, link lights blink, you can ping the linux box ping out ping all over, but maybe. Don't have another long cable though

On board nic on Intel 525 mother board

That is google for Dns primary and secondary would be willing to try another

Seems like I issued a command like " set default gw xxx.x.x.x" to set gateway but the syntax escapes me I've tried several combos
