Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

I'm new to linux, been using it for two months, I moved my puter to campus recently, and I connect to the Internet trough LAN, behind a proxy. I have a dual-boot system with Win98se.
When I download in windows, everything works fine, but under linux, downloads are very slow. Whereas I can download something with 200k/sec under Win I can olny get 10k under linux for the same thing. Previously I could not download at all - it began to download and then stopped and remained stalled for an eternity on 30-40k. Since I don't understan linux very well yet, I tried every setting that I could access via the GUI, and I could solve that problem by switching off Ip Forwarding in sysctlconfig-gtk. But I've been unable to solve the slow downloads - in fact I don't even know where to begin looking for an answer.
I also removed IPchains and Portmapping from Service Configuration, but it didn't help. I'm not running a server or anything like that, I just simply want to have the speed I'm accustomed to under Win. I became fond of Linux, and I already use it for most things (photochopping with Gimp, openoffice, playing movies, etc) - and this is the last thing I use win98 for - I don't want it.
So, any clue as to what I should check, or what might be the problem? Thanks in advance...
ps. please, in layman's terms, I'm: beginner, technologically challenged, etc.
