Slow console scroll speed

I'm running RedHat Linux without X. The problem is that the screen scroll speed is very slow. For example, if I go to /usr/bin (which has hundreds of files) and do an ls, it takes a long time to finish.

I believe this may have something to do with the fact that I pass "vga=794" to the kernel on boot to get a finer resolution.

I've already (unsuccessfully) tried the fbset tip that I found here:
http://www.digitalhermit.com/linux/hiresconsole.html

Anyone have any ideas?
