Sleeping SAMBA
 

While I'm very new to Linux, certainly not to computers. I believe I've most of the config correct for the server I'm trying to install to replace wind&^s server. Clients connect, everyone see's it, once connected all works, but over night when the users (6 total) logoff thier local machines and turn them off, they are not able to reconnect to the Linux smbd service. All I have to do is move the mouse on the server and then suddenly the clients can connect. What's up with that.

It appears the service is going to sleep, but based on the options I've been able to find on the system that pertain to this, nothing should sleep while plugged in. I've sold my customer on this OS because I believe it is "better" than MS. Any idea's TIA

Sounds like a basic APM problem. Either change your APM settings in your BIOS, get a NIC with WakeOnLan (kinda buggy for me).

Looks like the problem may be (IS) bigger. Yesterday after getting all the win*&@s workstations mapped to the samba server I was confident things were good until I got some response on this thread. wrong!! I wasn't gone 30min when I got the call that no body could access the share anymore, most were locked in mid stream and the general message was the share could no longer be found..

Not sure what to do now. I did manage to copy all the data off the linux box back to a windows workstation to be used as a server. Just took a big hit from customer about advantages of linux. I know that it's still a lot better, just I'm having problems implementing it right. Any ideas would be appreciated. TIA

Is there anything suspicious in the logs? It _still_ sounds like a power managment problem to me - have a look at the BIOS. Did you convert someone's old desktop PC into a linux server?
