Hi,

Welcome to Slackware!

If you have your network configured properly and desire to disconnect then reconnect the cable you should look at 'ifplugd'.

This link and others are available from 'Slackware-Links'. More than just SlackwareŽ links!

Do you get your IP from a DHCP server? If so, run
/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 restart
after you plugged in the cable. There was a thread with a similar question a week ago or so, you can probably easily find it.

Almost forgot... Try calling ifconfig like this

/sbin/ifconfig

from a user account. From the root account it should work as just

ifconfig

Hi,

You did try the 'ifplug'?

This daemon once installed/started will sense your cable when it's plug or unplugged. It will handle the 'inet'. That is unless you want to continue to manually start/stop the inet.

There is also wicd. It makes changing from interface to interface quite easy.
