slackware for the newbie?
 

hey all, 1st time poster here, longtime lurker.

i dusted off an old laptop and i was looking to load suse. but the problem is i only have 16mb of ram. the staff at suse couldn't help me really, but suggested suse 4.x. does anyone know where i could get that (winmx anyone?).

the aformentioned failing, what's the probability of a newbie installing slackware?

i think it's not difficult installing slackware... as long as you don't choose the more expert options. it's as easy as redhat (text based install).

there are just a few differences between slack and suse. it's all linux anyway.

probably the part you need to get used to would be the configuration part after the install... stuff like which services you want to run, configuring X windows, securing your box etc etc.

and of course, recompiling the kernel... (but this one is not that difficult... look for any of the slack enthusiasts... Aussie, finegan, taz, tricky... at the slack forum... they'll be able to help you out.

most of these differences are very subtle and will almost be transparent to you anyway. personally, i prefer the way slackware handles things.

I just installed Slackware 7.0 on a Toshiba Laptop. It coexists with Win 95. It took only about 1 1/2 hours to do everything including setting up X to start. If I can be of any help, just ask. :)

why 7.0?
why not 8.0?
