slackware first boot


hi,
i finally installed slck 11.
when i boot first time it ask for login, but when i log,i only get a salutation, a sentence, u got mail......and that's it, it stops......is it that or something is missing? am i doing something wrong?
thanx for help

nope, that's it indeed. slacks default-runlevel is 3, no GUI. Type
startx if that's not what you wanted :}

No, that would be correct, assuming it is giving you a prompt.

Slackware doesn't automatically start a GUI desktop unless you tell it to do so.

Try entering the command

Code:
startx
and see what happens.

To make Slackware automatically start the gui, edit the file "/etc/inittab"
look for this line:

# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6)
id:3:initdefault:

change the 3 to a 4 so you have:

# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6)
id:4:initdefault:

next time you boot, you will have a graphical login screen.

It's a bit premature to just startx and go. Run xorgconfig first to set up X so you have less of a chance of destroying your monitor. All you really need to know is the veritcal and horizontal frequencies and maybe the driver for your video card. While you're at it you might as well run `alsaconf` to set up and `alsactl store` to save your audio settings.
