Slackware doesn't allow me to use some ports

I start off by telling you, although I've run slackware for quite some time now, that this is my first experience getting Linux connected to the internet. (Since the other PC i'm running it on doesn't have anything to connect it to a modem or whatsoever). So please don't talk expert when replying!

This morning I set up a DHCP connection to the internet via a router in Slackware 10.2. I used the netconfig tool to set it up, entered the hostname, selected the "connect through ethernet" option (or however it's called) and put in my IP-address when prompted for it. As I've wrote this message, you can see it works fine now.... at least, that's what I thought

After installing, customizing and dealing with some other stuff, I also downloaded aMSN. Entered my account and password, and tried to log in - however, it did not allow me. The "signing in" image stayed there forever, without any change. By looking at the connection-options, I saw it directly connects to the internet using port 1863. And as every connection to the internet usually connects on this PC directly, it should work!

Next thing I tried was setting the port open in my router-config. It had no effect. Downloaded gAIM, tried to log in using that one, and experienced the same problem over again. Then I changed the option for connecting to the internet (in aMSN) from direct connection to "connect via the HTTP-protocol". Still didn't work. Even tried a proxyserver, the final option it displayed. As you've already guessed, no results. I think it's got something to do with my ports, but I'm not sure since I'm totally new to linux-internetting. Might be something totally different.

Does anyone has an idea how I can fix this problem? That'll be a great help!

Thanks in advance,
Pascal.

Can you please elaborate on what the router is, whether it's fire-walling
too or not? And if you're using DHCP there shouldn't be a need to give
any IP address at all, just "tick the box" for DHCP in netconfig and off
you go ... another question would be whether you can ping the hosts
in question, do they resolve names properly?

Cheers,
Tink
