Slackware - Could not open default font 'fixed'

Hi,

I have Slackware 12.2 on a HP dv6t series notebook. Using xwmconfig I set it to KDE. When I run startx, it fails with the error "Could not open default font 'fixed'".

The xorg.config has a number of font paths /usr/share/fonts/.../ and the log file shows that the font paths were set. I didn't see any other warnings or errors in the log file too.

There are a number of similar posts here. I tried the following based on them but it's still not working.
- Re-installed the X-Windows package via the setup. The media and installation seemed fine.
- There was one about 'makefontscale' and 'makefontdir'. I'm not sure what these are but it couldn't find 'makefontscale' or 'makefontdir'.
- I have plenty of disk space

Thanks in advance,

Regards,

Ash.

Slackware 12.2, /etc/X11/xorg.conf , created with xorgconfig :
Code:
# This loads the font modules
# Load "type1"
    Load "freetype"
# Load "xtt"
Which means : Load "freetype" works, the others lines are uncommented.

So please try editing to have ' Load "freetype" ' only.
Or may be create a new file with 'xorgsetup'.
( xorgconfig is complicated, if you haven't used it before.)
.....

Actually re-creating the fonts directory and refreshing the cache fixed it. This is the suggestion provided in a different thread.

In fact I had tried this earlier (see mentioned in my first post) but it hadn't worked because I wasn't using the correct command (duh! next time I should read more carefully). It's mkfontdir and not makefontdir.

But I still wonder why this had to be done because the fonts.dir and fonts.scale files did exist before I ran the commands.

Regards,

Ash.

Sorry, I never saw that problem, ( I think)
having used several Slackware' since 2002.

A tip about commands :
If you wrote : 'makef<TAB>' , you would have got
all commands starting with "makef"
( Probably none makef** at all.)

It is called "bash completion" and frees you from
writing the whole word, and also makes sure, that
the spelling is correct.
