Slackware 9.0, old laptop, cinfiguration problems!!

Hi everyone, I really need some help!! I have slackware 9.0 running on an old Dell CP m233st, using fluxbox as a window manager, and some gnome utils.
I have a few problems:
1: I can't mount the CDROM as a regular user, I must be root. I found a thread about something similar, and Peacedog had posted to change some lines in /etc/fstab:
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,owner,ro 0 0
to
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto, user, ro 0 0

I rebooted the machine, but no joy. /etc/fstab kept the changes, and a new file fstab~ was created. I still can't mount the cdrom as a user!

2: Similar to above, how to I change the group that a user belongs to? I have a lot of problems doing anything as a regular user, and it's annoying to change to root for every litlle thing. I need a real walkthrough on this one, cos I haven't got a clue!!

2: When I installed slack, I specified a UK keyboard map. Now it seems to be using a US keyboard map. Is there any way to change this within linux, or must I reinstall the whole lot? (I'd hate to do that, have a lot of stuff set up, like java, etc..... : D )

3: I want to configure my soundcard, not sure what type of soundcard is in the machine, but I tried using alsaconf as root, and the shell returned command not found! I don't mind what way the soundcard is found, I just want to configure it to listen to some "choons" while I program stuff for college....

4: Can someone with some experience of fluxbox give me some pointers on setting up menus, symbolic links, that type of stuff, and if anyone has a link to a newbie friendly tutorial for both slackware and fluxbox!

Any help is greatly appreciated!

You can probably reset it using pkgtool.

Go here:
http://users.ev1.net/~arfonrg/Linux-...und/index.html

and follow my instructions BUT CHANGE THIS LINE:
./configure --with-cards=cs4236 --with-sequencer=yes;make;make install

to:
./configure/make/make install

This should get your sound working.

Arfon, quick question. Your website gives good directions, but I don't have soundcore, i think!
when I typed in

modprobe soundcore

i get nothing back from the terminal, it just returns to the prompt.
On your site you say that you must recompile the kernel-modules. I'm afraid I'm in over my head with that, can you help me out some?
Thanks!
