SlackWare 9.0 install seg faults

Greetings from South Africa.

I'm trying to get an old P1 to run Linux ... the other 5 boxes on my LAN are happily Windows, but I want to be free :D !!.

Scanned the forum messages, but nothing quite matches.
How-to's and other doc is kinda sketchy too, so here goes ...

Stand-alone P1-120 with 64Mb RAM. Slackware 9.0

1. Could not boot CDRom until I used SBOOTMGR floppy disk. (My home-made Win98 boot disk is fine, BTW)
2. Turned off BIOS plug-n-play.
3. BARE.I boots from CD now.

4. Multiple partition attempts before finally 1st as swap, 2nd as linux (now on new 20Gb Seagate drive)

4. Now following SETUP steps ...
4.1 ADDSWAP seems okay
4.2 TARGET filesys troubles, Ext2 with or without sector check fails with segfault
4.3 Got past that by using "reigerfs" - not as fussy ?
4.4 Selected full source (defaults) and tried install.
. Got somewhere past lilo package before segfault again.
. Alt-F4 console had messages about SuZe etc, related ?

Suspect more shyte with hardware, but ... DASD or RAM ?
Disk too big for BIOS, 64Mb RAM too low, motherboard ??
I'm not quite sure what else to try fiddling with.

I'm loathe to give this machine back to Windows.
Anyone with any bright ideas ??

TIA ... Owl.

It sounds to me as if the media your using is bad

maybe the iso got currupted at d/l or the disc
is scratched. If the disk said "reigerfs" instead of
"reiserfs" something is wrong.

The exact error messages that are sent to the console
might be helpful even if it is a pain to write them down by
hand. Also your exact hardware config Mobo, cpu, bios
vendor/version, etc.

If you suspect the memory is bad you can use
memtest check http://www.memtest86.com/
if it's the ram you might be able to get by
using the "BadRam" module.

I am prepared to but am not convinced that copying the screen of messages and registers will help any ... here's why.

As per the suggestion, ran memtest for over 7 hours, no errors reported.

Following another thread, I downloaded and burned a SlackLive CD
(used a RW disk to curtail costs ;-)).
... Bootstrap CDROM first, "Missing Operating System"
...
... Bootstrap courtesy SBOOTMGR floppy first :-
..... Dies during startup with "invalid EIP dereference", kernel panic etc.

I then happily booted same CD on one of my newer machines.
... Guess that removes the media as a variable !.
(I also finally got to see KDE ... pretty cool !)

Remaining variables to be checked are :-
1. SBOOTMGR vs CD install.
... Why cannot boot direct from CD.
2. Motherboard / BIOS

Tonight I'll try replacing the new 20Gb disk with an older, smaller one ... complete low-level format and then re-partition via SlackLive (if it works).
