Slackware 12 install problem
Hi everyone!
Well My name is Milen, and I'm kind of new to Linux - I mean that have used it from time to time, but being a student was keeping me close to Win. Now I've finished my education and I want to learn Linux. I have used some distributions like SUSE Live 9.1 - with this one I started, than Knoppix, Debian - for short time and finaly slackware. I use Slackware since 2006. I'm far from being EXPERT or any kind of professional at linux. I was using Slackware 11 to teach myself and learn how to do thing with Linux. And besides it was light enough to run on my bad-sectored HDD. Now there is Slackware 12 and I want to try it. I've downloaded it and burned it on DVD. First I've installed it on my old TEST machine: Quote:
It worked just fine. I Have Windows Xp on 40 Gb HDD and on the other one I've put Slackware 12. then I decide to put it on my New PC: Quote:
And there was the problem. I hit ENTER on bthe BOOT prompt and the instalation began, but suddenly freezed at this text: NET Registered protocol family 2. I've decide to try the other choise: HUGE.S and it freezed at: Serial: 8250/16550 driver $Revision: 1.90 $ 4 ports, IRQ sharing enabled. I've read all over the google and the net.... I updated my BIOS to newer version, but no effect, then I start looking at my bios settings - no effect. At this moment I'm wondering to install Slackware 11 and then to upgrade it to 12, but I'M NEW TO LINUX and it will be hard... can you give me please some advice how to install slackware 12 on my NEW machine? |
I don't have a solution. Just trying to narrow down the problem.
Your Slackware 12 has been installed in an older PC that proves the media satisfactory. I have Slackware 12 installed in a Sata II and am using Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 with 4x1Gb 800Mhz ram so Slackware 12 can go with modern hardware. I know there have been many complaints against new mobos with newish chipsets especially with AM2 CPU. There is a possibility Slackware 12, or Slackware 11 may not like your hardware. So I would try to install a few other distros to see if a pattern emerges. |

I test new distros on my OLD PC. I like Slackware it gives me freedom or at least it makes me feel that way. When I firs saw this problem I start googling about it a lot, and i saw many similar things, but with different solutions - mostly the ACPI. I've tried everything that i saw but with no use. I'm almost sure that this is not because of the NEW HARDWARE. What I think is that Something in my BIOS is wrong - a setting or so? Don't know really. I'm thinking to put Slackware 11 and to see if it will install. Is it possible to Upgrade from 11 to 12 and is it hard to be done? 10x for any help! 10x! ONE MORE QUESTION: Can I USE SLAMD64 - is it LIKE slackware or there are som NEW things? |
Slamd64 is an unofficial port of Slackware Linux to the x86_64 architecture.
I believe you may have a job on your hand trying to upgrade Slackware 11 to Slackware 12. My Slackware 11 uses the stable kernel 2.4.33 but Slackware now runs a 2.6.21 kernel. I would just install them in different partitions. I have Slackware 12 in a 10Gb partition and its footprint is only 3.3Gb |
