slackware 12 help needed
 

hi, i have just installed salckware 12.0 and have not had any problems during the installation, but after the reboot i logged in as root and then as usual it is showing: root@name:~# here i don't know what to type, i have already tried startx but didn't work i wonder if there is some other commands to type to enable me to log in properly.

please bear in mind i am quite new to linux, and i am sitting right now waiting for your replies as i am stuck with logging in.

all your answers are appreciated .

startx

Takes you into the GUI. If its not properly configured run xorgconfig (xorgconf) to configure it. Would also help us here in the forums if you posted more hardware information (graphics card, processor and ram and such) so we can give more feedback on what is needed for configuration.

Welcome to the forums and to Slackware :).

Also there is a slackware specific forum under distributions for specific questions that might get better responses to any questions you may have. Be patient and lots of slackware users will be willing to help with most any problems you are having :).

You should make a user account as well, which you can do with "adduser".

the above is some info about the system that i am using at the moment.

i think i need to reboot now and go try xorgconf, in the mean time can you please tell what hostname and domain name i should use when i add a new user?

I leave whatever blank I can blank hehhe. If you are on a network might talk to an administrator. As a home system i belive i set mine up as slackware and MSHome respectively.

You don't fill in a hostname and domain name when you add a new user account, only when you configure your network.

i have created the user account but still does not work here is the messages that i get when i type startx:


fatal error server
xinit: connection reset by peer (error 104) unable to connect to X server

xinit: no such process (error 3): server error

user@user:~$

the reason for asking about the host and domain was because when i installed it as you know it asks you for them and i was not sure which names could they be.

Have you run xorgconf? The default video settings are likely not compatible, might try setting the video card to vesa and getting the exact specs on the monitor.

i also wish to confirm whether i have made the partitions correctly:

swap : 100 Mb

/ : 15GB

/usr : 19GB

i am not sure whether the partition sizes are correct for my computer or not?

i have ran slackware 11 on the same system before, i only had intenet connections problem

That setup should work. Might go 500meg on swap just in case though.

I actually only have a everything in root although I do have a full 4 partitions:
4gig swap (doesn't seem to get used at all lol)
60 gig slackware /
60 gig xfs partition for backing up data
20ish gig testbed for other distro's.

do you think i should run xorgconf and change the video setting to vesa? because when i ran this command today i did not understand everything so i just kept pressing enter for the dfault settings.

Vesa is a generic setting until you get specific information on what video card you are running so the driver can be installed.

sorry i don't understand why we need to know the vedio card specifications because as i said i have used the same system to run slackware 11 before and don't know if there is a big difference between the two.

i am using CPz to check the system information and i don't know where and how i can get the video card specifications?
