slackware 11/slackware current
 

Hi again, this might seem a stupid question, but as a newbie we are allowed Ha,Ha. I have been getting a lot of help from many of you who use the forum - and for that I am very grateful. I think this is an excellent forum and will be around for quite some time - did I hear "oh no" sure I heard that. Any way my question is this - what is the difference between slackware 11 and slackware current? I ask this because you have to chose the right one when you uncomment in slackpkg.Can someone enlighten me on this subject, please.

Slack current is the development tree. It changes rapidly at times and will eventually become the next release.

Unless you're looking to upgrade to -current choose 11 for a slackpkg mirror or you risk some serious instability problems. There is a specific order to upgrade to -current and if you just upgrade everything with slackpkg you'll likely break your system in a hurry.

To clarify a bit on what mason said (Which is dead on right):

If you don't know what you're doing, don't even try to mess with -current.

Stay with 11. It works great, easy to install, and very stable.

Also, if your just hacking away on your box and want to get current for the compiz stuff then there are Slackware-Current ISO's that others have built.

Thanks guys, I guess that sort of answers my question. I will keep with the slacware 11 for the time being. Do stable patches get added to slackware 11 for download with slackpkg? I am not trying to cop out of working at ground level withe slackware - it's just that my girlfriend feels that my computer gets more attention than her - most of us computer freaks know that feeling. Slackpkg can take away some of the more mundane side of things. I am still looking for info about compiling a kernel from start to finish that gives a little more info on how one changes lilo - with the command structure. Would like to know if it is advisable to upgrade to the latest kernel?

Sorry for so many questions - a thirst for knowledge if you know what I mean.
Ps I know that slackpkg is on one of the cd's not sure of the command structure to mount cd and download/install from cd?

Do this as root

Slackware specific instructions

1. Put the cd in the cd/dvd drive
2. type mount /mnt/cdrom
3. type df to verify it was mounted.
4. type cd /mnt/cdrom, then ls to view the contents of the cdrom.

To move between folders, type cd foldername

If you have the slackware dvd version, slackpkg is in the extras folder. If you have the cdroms, slackpkg is on cd 3 in the
extras folder.

These packages are slackware binaries. No need to compile. To install type

installpkg package-name.xxx.tgz
