Slack 8.1 problem
I am attempting to install slackware 8.1 on my scsi system, intel l440gx+ dual pentium III 600mhz system. I have 2 IBM 18gb scsi harddrives as well. I've attempted to use the kernels that came on the cd's scsi.s, scsi2.s adaptec.s which have all failed giving different errors. I did a little searching and found that *I think* I should be using the aic7xxx.s kernel. after loading up the floppy it recognizes the scsi channels (which none of the other kernels do) and then recognizes the hard drive(s) (I've attempted difference configurations, removing hdd's reversing order etc.). It shows the partitions, then I get:
VFS: Cannot open root device 03:41
Kernel panic: Unable to mount root fs on 03:41.
This happens on both hard drives. I know the harddrives are ok, windows will install, and so will redhat.
I don't know for sure that I am even using the correct bootdisk image. If anyone has any idea about what is going on, or how I can get this to work, it would be greatly appreciated.
Hope you guys don't mind, I'm just going to bump this, just in case it gets missed.
the l440gx+ (lancewood) has onboard symbios SCSI AFAIK so if you have the HDDs on the onboard SCSI bus it's scsi.s which should load SYM53C8XX.
P.S. You didn't hear this from me but stay away from using both of the top PCI slots (closest to the CPUs) at the same time ;)
Thanks for the response, I learned the hard way about the PCI slots, almost threw a perfectly good graphics card away :-P As far as using scsi.s I can log into to run setup and fdisk, however there are no scsi drives (sda, sdb, etc) found. I am unable to run fdisk /dev/sdx, fsck and f2sck. Using that kernel though, there are a few error messages printed before I get to login such as a few lines showing sharing of IRQ's devices 00:09.0 and 00:0c.1 and 00:0c.0 all sharing 11, request_module[scsi_hostadapter]: Root fs not mounted repeated 2 more times. But first It says:
Initializing RT netlink socket
***Possibly defective BIOS detected (irqtable)
***Many BIOSes matching this signature have incorrect IRQ routing tables.
***If you see IRQ problems, in particulur SCSI resets and hangs at boot
***contact your verndor and ask about updates.
***Building an SMP kernel may evade the bug some of the time.
I supposed I cold try using slack 8.0's smp.s kernel and see how that works.
