Skype auto closing?
 

Hi again.
It is your not so loved neighbor having messed up her linux yet again! Tonights issue? Any time i try to open skype it closes out fully in 5 seconds (not even in the processes anymore). I don't know why or how OR how to make it stop being so mean to me! i'm running ubuntu 10.4 32bit . I tried to boot it in safe mode and umm.. it froze? or crashed? well it was on the black screen with the blinking dot for like 20 mins before i gave up on it (Hiting enter or esc or anything didn't work). There was a key symbol on my panel before skype acted up(It closed and disabled something.. i've never seen it before). Adobe also crashed, and linux did a small update (nothing with skype). If you can help me asap i'd be grateful cause skype is my only way of talking to my hubby....who is normally the one who saves me. X.x;

update: I have tried booting in failsafe and i'm currently on it. I tried to open skype via terminal and again it "aborted" it. I got the key to show up again.. and figured out what it was. I looked at the updates and none of it should have effected skype. Still trying little things as i go X.x

I've had this happen on occasion. Maybe try renaming your .Skype directory (in your home directory), as perhaps some of the files have gotten corrupted. When you run Skype again, things should be regenerated. Hopefully this helps.

It seems that Skype is presently experiencing "issues" (Google News).

I'm not a Skype user, but I understand it can be fixed by removing a couple of xml config files.

Unfortunately I've purged skype and re-installed. Same issues, it aborts the program. It seemingly isn't the files.. and i can't rename it cause i can't log into root (hubby doesn't want me near root cause umm.. i'm the destroyer of everything i touch... but really he rather me figure things out without touching root at all.) But ya.. the file tells me i'm not its owner XD

The .Skype directory in your home directory should be owned by you. Can you just run "ls -l | grep -i Skype" in a terminal and post the output here, please?

ls lists files and the -l (this is a lowecase L, not number one) option gives us more info than just the file names (i.e. permissions, last modification time, etc)

grep searches for any lines containing a given string (in this case "Skype").

I typed that in terminal and nothing happens. X.x and yes i'm sure i typed it right.

Sorry, my fault. You need the -a option to ls, to show hidden files. So, it should be

ls -la | grep -i Skype

drwx------ 6 kajikitsune kajikitsune 4096 2011-05-26 10:06 .Skype ((skype is in red.. if that means anything to you))

The red is just because grep matched "Skype", so it's meaningless here. OK, so the permissions are fine. Again, just try renaming the directory, e.g. "mv .Skype Skype-old" and try to start Skype again.

I love you <3 It worked. It reset skype this time. I'm so happy right now.. I'm just confused to how purging it and re-installing didn't fix the files. But it works and so the great mystery is SOLVED!

Cool. Yes, sometimes for some reason, things in .Skype just break. This method of moving the existing "profile" directory (so a new one is generated) often works for fixing other programs, too. Please mark your thread as solved by using the "Thread Tools" at the top.

Already had marked as solved.. and now i have the SAME issue with tomboy notes *cries*

Try the same thing. The directory seems to be .tomboy. If this happens with lots of programs, perhaps something more serious is wrong.

I finished my update to 10.10 and it seems to have fixed tomboy and i'm hoping anything else. Thanks again for being wonderful.
