Well you are missing the driver module. SIS cards can be very often driven by Trident modules. Try to get this module or recompile the kernel.

how would i go about recompling the kernel, ive been using linux for about a week. i did try to configure the souncard and got it to use the snd-trident drivers but it still came up with the same messages.

If i do need to recompile the kernel are there any good guides around to give idot proof instructions

Andy,

it's important that you enable the trident driver wen compiling the kernel.
