Single instance of application

Hello,

I don't know whether the thing i'm asking for is possible or not, but i'll still give it a try.

I have gnome+compiz running. Let's say I click on the terminal launcher on my gnome panel. A terminal shows up. If I click on it another time, another terminal window pops up. What i want is that when i click on the terminal launcher when another terminal window is already opened, it automatically focuses on the existing window and doesn't open another one, so that there is only one instance of the terminal running at at time. A bit like in AWN.

Can anyone help me out ?

Thanks.

I don't think this is possible in Gnome.

A Gnome launcher is designed to launch something, not to focus on something that's already launched.

Ok then is it possible to make the terminal behave like some apps like banshee ? ie when i click on the close button the window disappears but does not actually close, and when i run banshee again it opens at the same point where it was before?

Thanks.

Reminder: i'm using compiz.
