Siemens Laptop lifebook 1020 modem dialup configuration

Hi Community

This is my first attempt to see how this type of communication medium works.

So here goes

I need help

I have suse 9.3 about 2 weeks following the 9.2 version I had for about a week.

The SW has been loaded onto a Siemens Life Book 1020 alongside Windows XP successfully.

Linux cannot dial out via the inbuilt modem

The Laptop has a modem the Windows reports as a SoftK56 CARP modem
Linux Suse reports it as a 97 Compatible Modem 537 If I recall correctly.

Within my limited capacity I have loaded many rpm's that should provide functionality but to no success.

I have taken INIT strings from the Windows config and dropped them into the Linux init strings and spent probably in the area of about 15 hours over several days on this issue.

Windows works fine for dial up

Sorry to say with all the hype about Linux being free and open and all the unless they marketing issues, if the general man in the street has to go through so much trouble to get connected then this Operating System will not fly.

There is a business approach of addressing your market. Linux may be for the Server Domain on network but as desktop has a long way to go before dear Bill should get worried.

Siemens have a very big forum re notebooks and PC's so it should be a concern for the Linux providers to look into this

Any sucess stories on the connection to the Siemens Lifebook 1020 will be appreciated.

Moved: This thread is more suitable in a more technical forum like Linux-Newbie and has been moved accordingly to help your thread/question get the exposure it deserves.

From my search it looks that the right driver is Conexant HSF. The installation is rather easy (just follow the instructions from http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/install.php). That's the good part.

The thing is that the free driver has limited speed (if you want full, you need to pay). That shows why there's problem with drivers for some hardware - vendors sometimes don't release drivers, if they don't release drivers they usually don't want to publish specification (to allow someone else to write a driver - without specification it's a very time consuming task).

Thanks Mara

I have however tried that already. I downloaded the rpm I thought was correct and tried to install it and it failed.

I then downloaded several of the others to try them ( on the off chance as well) and they failed.

For Install I do a loading via file manager ( superuser ) Suse 9.3 in then install using Yast, and also have tried via Yast directly and import function. Have not tried via terminal but I am lazy re that as my typing is a little slow.

It should however work via the first two methods all other rpn for other functionality works

So now I am downloading the generic unsupported rpm versions to continue the quest.

If there is success I will post it

Once again thanks
