shutting down x86
 

hi,
I'm trying to install Nvidias drivers, i have them downloaded,i have tried to run the installer,
but after running for a second it tells me i should not be installing the drivers while X is running. I have tried ctrl+alt+f3 to take me to run level 3 where there is no GUI but when i tried the installer it again told me that X was still running. So here is my question, how do i shut down X so i can install the drivers?


I have literally just installed linux for the first time this month and i really like it. But like most windows users migrating to linux i find a lot of it completely alien. I am determined to learn at least the basics of the cmd line. I gather from what i have read that run level 3 is my best choice for a temporary chance to get at the installer without X starting would i be correct in thinking run levels can be set as default to whichever level you want a boot?

any replies would be apreciated.

Open a terminal, become root with su then use the command init 3 to switch to run level three. Login as root and run the nvidia installer.

sorry I tried that , i doesnt work because even though i am running at level3 and i have no GUI whenever i reboot X starts by default. And when i su to root and init3 from my normal user accout which is running X by default whenever i try to run the NVIDIA installer it tells me X is still running in the back ground.
I know there is an easier soloution i imagine it would be an edit of x86config but i can't imagine what i would be editing.

Ok, well lets go a different way, edit /etc/inittab and change initdefault to 3 then reboot. What distro are you running, by the way?

i,m runnin Redhat 9: 2.4.20.8
on AMD athlon xp2000+
with nvidia Geforce4 400mx
256mb Ram

roughly 10 HD dedicated to linux on a dual boot with win2k

i'v jus bin learning how to use vi so i can edit the files i need to edit i can feel myself getting closer to the soloution :)

found an article in redhat that virtually does it for you.

i will finish this thread in a little while hopefully when i get a sucsessful NVIDIA splash screen.:)

i had to use your method of editing /etc/inittab and change the default run level
i did this using vi:
then i navigated to the installer installed it and it ran no problems .
i jus got my nvidia splash screen up and everything seems to be running a lot faster.
